“The Eucharist is my highway to Heaven.”
— St. Carlo Acutis
A Modern Saint for the Digital Age
Carlo Acutis was born on May 3, 1991, in London, England, to Italian parents Andrea Acutis and Antonia Salzano. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Milan, Italy, where Carlo grew up.
From a very young age, Carlo showed an extraordinary devotion to the Catholic faith. He received his First Communion at the age of seven — earlier than the typical age in Italy — because of his deep spiritual maturity. From that moment on, he attended Mass daily and spent time in Eucharistic adoration, which he called "my highway to Heaven."
Technology in Service of Faith
Carlo was a gifted computer programmer who taught himself to code at a young age. Rather than using technology for entertainment alone, he channeled his skills into spreading the Gospel. His most notable project was creating a website that catalogued Eucharistic miracles from around the world — a digital exhibition that has since traveled to every continent.
He famously said: "All people are born as originals, but many die as photocopies." He encouraged young people to use the internet as a tool for evangelization rather than vanity.
A Life Cut Short
In October 2006, at just 15 years old, Carlo was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. He offered his sufferings for the Pope and for the Church. He died on October 12, 2006, in Monza, Italy.
Even in his final days, Carlo showed remarkable faith and peace. He told his mother: "I offer all the suffering I will have to endure for the Lord, for the Pope, and for the Church."
Path to Sainthood
Carlo's cause for canonization was opened in 2013. He was declared Venerable in 2018, and beatified on October 10, 2020, in Assisi, Italy, where his body is now enshrined. The miracle attributed to his intercession involved the healing of a Brazilian boy with a rare pancreatic condition.
A second miracle — the healing of a Costa Rican girl — was approved, leading to his canonization by Pope Leo XIV on September 7, 2025 — alongside Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati — making him the first millennial saint in the history of the Catholic Church.
Legacy and Inspiration
St. Carlo Acutis is a powerful reminder that holiness is possible at any age and in any era. His life demonstrates that technology, when used with purpose and faith, can become a tool for bringing souls closer to God.
He is the patron saint of the internet, youth, and computer programmers — and a special inspiration for the EmmausOS platform, which seeks to use technology in service of faith and community, just as Carlo envisioned.
